Nutritional Counseling

From Food to Fuel

Proper nutrition is essential for your pet’s overall health and longevity. At Woodbury Animal Hospital, we provide expert nutritional counseling to help you make informed decisions about your pet’s diet. Whether your pet needs weight management, special dietary considerations, or breed-specific nutrition, our team is here to assist.

Feeding Recommendations

Feeding the right food in the correct amounts prevents health issues such as obesity, allergies, and deficiencies. Nutritional needs vary by age, breed, and health conditions. Senior pets require different nutrients than puppies or kittens, and pets with conditions like diabetes or kidney disease benefit from specialized diets. Our veterinarians help you choose the best diet and create a tailored nutrition plan.

Pet Nutrition

Choosing the right pet food can be overwhelming. We guide pet owners in selecting nutritionally balanced, veterinary-approved diets tailored to their pet’s age, breed, and health. If you have any questions about your pet’s diet, we are happy to offer guidance.

Common Pet Food Concerns

  • Food Allergies: Symptoms include skin irritation, ear infections, and excessive paw licking. Switching protein sources may help. If issues persist, we can recommend a specialized diet.
  • Obese Pet Treats: Low-calorie, grain-free, and vegetable-based treats are available. Treats should make up no more than 10% of daily intake.
  • Corn in Pet Food: Corn is a beneficial source of protein and antioxidants and is rarely a cause of pet food allergies.
  • Raw Diets & Homemade Meals: Raw diets pose risks of bacterial contamination and nutrient deficiencies. Homemade meals should be guided by a pet nutritionist.

Prescription Diets & Supplements

For pets with medical conditions, we offer prescription diets tailored to support health, including options for allergies, arthritis, kidney disease, and diabetes. Supplements such as glucosamine and vitamins aid in managing age-related changes. Consult our team for recommendations.

Pet Food Classifications

The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) defines different pet food classifications:

  • By-products: Clean and free from foreign substances, offering essential nutrients.
  • Natural: Derived from plants, animals, or mined sources with no chemical processing.
  • Organic: At least 95% of ingredients meet USDA National Organic Program standards.

Food classification does not determine quality. Some organic or natural diets may lack essential nutrients found in foods containing by-products. Our veterinarians can help you select a nutritionally balanced diet best suited for your pet’s needs.

Giant Breeds

Giant breeds, such as Great Danes and Irish Wolfhounds, have unique dietary needs. Many commercial foods lack the proper balance of calcium, protein, and energy for their development. We offer expert guidance on feeding schedules and diet choices to ensure proper growth and prevent developmental issues.
